The Horde beneath

After months of increasing attacks by the Horde, which appeared to
completely ignore the closed gates, finally the residents of Kinsarmar
tracked a fleeing goblin into the sewers, discovering a hidden tunnel in
the western section, leading off into the distance. Before they could
venture far down it, the cunning goblin managed to collapse the tunnel
behind him, effectively sealing it off and nearly crushing the pursuers.
Alerted to the disturbances beneath him, Master Theodore sent one of his
apprentices to investigate, who soon offered to dig out the tunnel to
allow Kinsarmar to strike back against their aggressors. After some
consideration, Duchess Wren agreed to this course of action, and the
apprentice immediately started digging.

Toiling many days and nights, she eventually alerted the city to the
fact she had nearly broken through into a separate cavern, and was
rapidly joined by a guard comprised of many brave warriors. With a swift
and mighty strike of her pickaxe, the apprentice finally managed to
breech the walls, revealing a massive stone gate guarded by orcs, ogres
and goblins. Led by Mathiu, the small army quickly slew the guards, then
constructing a battering ram to destroy the gate. Quickly penetrating
the complex, they discovered it to be a subterranean outpost manned by
the Horde, and filled with many rifts through which more forces could be
summoned. After the group managed to slay all the invaders who were
present, the apprentice returned to Master Theodore to consult with him
about their options, leaving the others to patrol the outpost for more
of the Horde entering via the rifts.

Nearly a month passed, and the rifts began to open more and more
frequently, slowly flooding the complex with an assortment of vile
invaders, though many bravely attempted to quell them. It was only after
the apprentice informed them of the new plan, to fill the complex with
barrels of black powder, primed by a bomb, and blow the entire place up
that a large enough group coalesced to defeat the swarming Horde.
Quickly, the apprentice placed barrels in every room, as well as a
massive iron bomb in the centre of the outpost, informing the group that
they would need to fill each up with large amounts of black powder,
whilst simultaneously fighting back the increasing numbers spilling
through the rifts.

The well-organised group proceeded to do so, in short order transforming
the complex into a fiery death-trap which hopefully would put an end to
the place. Once all the black powder was placed, the apprentice
retreated to the sewers, giving a fuse to Mathiu with instructions on
how to use it. As the rest of the group cleared out, he bravely battled
the remaining Horde as he progressed towards the main bomb, lit the fuse
and placed it before running clear of the tunnels and into the sewers
again, with mere seconds to spare. A massive explosion rocked the
Highlands, audible across entire continent as a mushroom-cloud of smoke,
dust and grit billowed up from the ground that had been above the
outpost, levelling it in a great and decisive victory upon the
encroaching Horde.

Penned by my hand on the 13th of Aequitas, in the year 461 AD.

However, the vast majority of this wouldn’t happen without our wonderful team of volunteers. Kiandre and Valethar have been with me since last year, and are instrumental with the work they have done for the…
