Though the menace of Malateph and his undead legions was at an end, the
troubles of Aetherius had not ended there. At first un-noticed as
mortals fought the zombies, storms in the ethereal currents of reality
had begun to spread across the land, small at first, but slowing
increasing in number and fury until many locations began to experience
distortions of reality with increasing severity. Vials began to animate,
growing mouths and legs, running off from their unfortunate owners.
Skills based in magick or devotion began to experience massive
fluctuations in their power, gold turned to lead in people's hands,
people were filled temporarily with great strength, speed or
intelligence, or else given the intelligence, speed and strength of
yeast. Even their forms experienced flux as many were turned into sheep
or frogs, their items often transformed or destroyed. Motes of ethereal
energy began to throw people across the land, or manifest bolts of
lightning which slew anyone they struck.
As the storms worsened, raging across Aetherius, again people sought out
a solution to these new, strange phenomena. Unfortunately, all were at a
loss until it was suggested seeking the aid of Lord Aesir, in His
incarnation as the Stormlord. Vynia passed the Orb of Clarity, which had
been identified as key to the storms, to the Voice of War. After
inspecting it, he determined that with the shattering of the skull, an
ancient 'knot' in the barriers between realms, centred around Cimi, had
been abruptly torn, the etherstorms manifesting as evidence of the
ruptured realms. Prayers to Lord Aesir were offered, and His will
destroyed the Orb completely, its shards transformed into Stormslayer
knifes that rained down upon the land.
As His voice echoed out, mortals were told that in order for the knifes
to work, they would first have to be 'charged' through honourable
combat. Cities and councils were given opponents, and wielders of the
daggers initated battle through an act of aggression. They were swiftly
swept up into the Realm of Tempests, where they fought to the death,
then returned at the end of the battle having lost nothing, the wielders
knife was then charged, able to end a storm and repair part of the
ruptured barriers. As of yet, many storms have been ended, but even more
remain raging across the realm, and who knows how their effects may
worsen given time. Many daggers appear to be being horded, Antioch in
particular storing many in houses. If the storms are allowed to continue
raging, the effects cannot be predicted, but devastation and corruption
of reality could well become massive horrific.
