I remember a time back when I was proud to call myself a Kinsarmarian. I had sworn the oath, taken up sword and shield, and established myself as a valiant defender of its walls. I enjoyed being able to help the city I was born in grow strong and remain strong and be a part of something more.

Now, I cannot, in good faith, bring myself to remain a citizen of the Duchy. Unwise actions on behalf of its leadership have resulted in a war in which the city is not only physically outmatched but tactically incapable of fighting. A stubborn refusal to surrender in the face of superiority has foolishly lead to constant raiding, the depletion of its resources, and the frequent deaths of combatants and noncombatants alike.

The government is corrupt. The good of the city is sacrificed in favour of cronyism. The protest of citizens is silenced on pain of death. Positions of power are wielded like bludgeoning implements to beat down anyone that disagrees with their foolish agenda. The ruling council has shown an inability, or perhaps refusal, to understand these problems.

I will no longer contribute to the decay and downfall of my homeland. When there comes a time that incompetent nepotists do not reign on the ruling council, authoritarian midgets do not fashion the word of the law into a stabbing implement, and power-hungry annoying bints are no longer in command of the city's combat forces, then perhaps I will return.

That is, if there's anything left to return to.
