13.9 Limb Damage
There are six body parts for the purposes of damage and combat in Imperian:
Head, Torso, Left Arm, Right Arm, Left Leg, Right Leg and Back.
Each of these body parts is able to take individual damage, and generally
attacks will tell you which body part they are attacking, if any. If no body
part is shown in an attack, then you are just taking general damage.
Attacks targetting body parts (such as via weapon attacks and the Targetting skill in Weaponry) do both damage against your health, and damage against the targetted body part. Generally, this damage will be lower than damage from an attack that is not targetting a body part.
Each bodypart has its own invisible health pool, which is roughly equal to your maximum health.
Limb armour
-----------
Limb armour protects your limbs and reduces the damage they take from attacks. Note that this does not reduce the damage to your health pool - only to the appropriate body part.
Armour | Bodypart
----------+---------------
Greaves | Left/right Leg
Vambraces | Left/right Arm
Helm | Head
Armour | Torso
Note: Armour also reduces physical damage in general, in addition to
reducing the damage your Torso takes from attacks.
Limb damage
-----------
As your limb takes damage, you will receive one of two warning messages before it breaks - when your limb is at 1/3 and 2/3 of its maximum health.
Once your limb has taken its full health in damage, it will receive one of the following afflictions, based on the body part:
Limb | Affliction
------+---------------
Back | Sprained back
Other | damaged <limb>
NOTE: Having a damaged leg or arm will also give you the corresponding
'crippled <limb>' affliction. This affliction is not actually
related to limb damage in any way.
Should you fail to have cured that affliction, and your limb once again takes its full health in damage, you will receive one of the following afflictions:
Limb | Affliction
------+-----------
Head | concussion
Arm | mangled left/right arm
Back | broken back
Torso | mangled torso
Leg | mangled left/right leg
While further limb damage has no affect on other limbs, should your back receive its full health in damage again while you have a broken back, you will die.
NOTE: Only the Monk profession currently has any means of damaging an
opponents back.
Effects
-------
While you are afflicted with a broken limb, you will experience the effects below:
Affliction | Affect
----------------+--------------------------------
Damaged Head | Causes stupidity
Damaged torso | Causes regular bleeding.
| Increases impale writhe length.
Damaged Arm | Can prevent attacking
Damaged Leg | Can delay or prevent moevement.
----------------+--------------------------------
Concussion | Causes amnesia
Mangled Torso | Causes significant bleeding
| Increases impale writhe length.
Mangled arm | Prevents attacking
Mangled leg | Prevents movement.
Curing
------
Limb damage may be cured via the application of restoration salve to the broken limb.
You may also partially heal your limbs before they break by channeling healing energy to them through the RESTORE ability in Survival.
Extra
-----
You may utilise the DIAGNOSE ability in Survival to determine the damage your limbs have taken.
Additionally, the Assessing ability in Survival allows you to determine the damage an opponent's limbs have taken.
