The Marble and the Clay

Said the marble to the clay,
"I am much better than you.
I am made into beautiful statues
that adorn houses and common squares,
while you are used to make pots
that break often and must be replaced.
I am a beautiful piece of rock;
emperors pay for me to be part of their palaces."
Said the clay to the marble,
"Do you know what it is like to carry water
for a warm, caring mother with soft hands?
Have you ever been made into some nonsensical shape
by a curious seven-year old?
For you I feel genuine sorrow
because you do not see the world you are missing.
Where I am gently molded into shape,
you are violently chipped away.
Where I can become any color my Maker wishes,
your color is pre-determined even before your existence."
The marble was silent for a while,
and then spoke, "I am much better than you."

Written as a reminder against arrogance and the typical hard-headedness
that seems to accompany it. Besides, who doesn't like to play with clay?

Penned by my hand on the 20th of Bellum, in the year 533 AD.
