Dear Lakessa,
I thank you for pointing out the Lorekeeper Code to the public, as it is
indeed the central document of my beloved guild. While I am not going to
make guild matters public matters, I would just like to address a few of
your comments. First of all, there have been very few oustings from the
guild in recent times. Instead, there have been a number of people who
have felt compelled to quit the guild because of the changes that are
occurring within. Incidentally, most of these folks who have chosen to
leave the guild have decided to either join Stavenn or at the very least
provide wares to Stavenn in some way, or have chosen to write market ads
geared to negatively impact former city and guild members. Hardly
candidates that abide by the Code that this guild is so based around.
It is no secret that the Lorekeepers are a guild in transition. Most
recently there had been calls by many to make the guild go the way of
the Ilaferi as it had gotten so far away from its initial purpose of
existence: a collection of Knights devoted to defending Kinsarmar. This
recent war with Stavenn did much to show who in the guild were truly
aligned with that cause and who were merely pretenders, willfully
slandering Kinsarmar while upholding their own self-righteousness and
apparent moral infallibility. During this war we saw some Lorekeepers
prove themselves to be true champions of the guild's cause, and we also
saw some turn traitor and betray both city and guild. Right now, it's
safe to say that we have far fewer of the latter than we did a year or
so ago.
Most of the changes that are occuring are under the surface and private,
but there will always be reflections of those changes publicly. Often
the beginnings of a transition like this will immediately appear as rash
or wrong-minded, only to turn out as logical or necessary in the long
run. If nothing else, there is no longer a clique that is bent on
favouring one another month after month, revelling in its hatred for the
city it is sworn to protect. It will take time for the changes within
the guild to become clear to the world around us, but I can assure you
that a closer adherance to the Code and our purpose within the world is
coming to fruition.
You didn't name names, and I will show the same courtesy in this post.
Let it be known, however, that a Lorekeeper must be a citizen of
Kinsarmar, and it follows that if the city of Kinsarmar deems that a
citizen has broken certain laws that require a Lorekeeper's expulsion
from the city, then that Lorekeeper will also be expelled from the
guild. You cannot be entrusted absolutely to defend a city that you are
not a citizen of, in our view, and we shall hold to that tenet.
The Code is certainly a worthy document to run a guild by, and in the
recent past, former Lorekeepers would either scoff at the very mention
of the Code or try to separate sections of it to justify their actions.
Fortunately, most who would do so are no longer with the guild, and
those who have remained have demonstrated a keen interest in driving the
guild forward with those principles in mind. We have many bright young
minds in the guild right now, and I have little doubt that this next
generation of Lorekeepers will make the city and the world proud. Until
then, please allow us the necessary growing pains that occur when such a
noble organization rediscovers its purpose.
Sincerely,
Ethelbert Kulmyrric, Knight-Commander of the Lorekeepers
Penned by my hand on the 24th of Ultio, in the year 464 AD.
